On April 13 Independent Lives is hosting a Question Time event in Crawley with Parliamentary Candidates to answer questions on issues affecting disabled people and carers. Come and join us for a relaxed, entertaining evening with your candidates for the 2015 General Election. Find out their views on issues that will affect you, to help you decide how to vote in May.

Independent Lives are Seeking Volunteer Advocates

Volunteer Advocates will be part of an exciting new advocacy service which aims to transform the help available to patients at local GP surgeries in Worthing and Adur.

The Volunteer Advocate’s role is to enable the service user to become the expert in their own life, take leadership and ownership of their choices, make informed choices and gain confidence. Advocacy aims to empower service users and ideally facilitates self-advocacy.

Ability Radio Southampton

Independent Lives' Head of Personal Health Budgets Katherine Beard was on Ability Radio last week, talking about the importance of Direct Payments and integrated care.

Ability Radio is hosted on Voice FM, a local radio station which operates in Southampton. The program is run by disabled people for disabled people and is broadcast every two weeks online starting from March 4. Care Act Consultation Response Launched by West Sussex

West Sussex County Council’s public consultation on how they will implement the Care Act closed on February 11. The implementation of the Care Act well begin from April 1 and feedback was given by people across the county on how they wanted their support and care to be delivered.

Over the consultation period, West Sussex County Council held a number of focus groups with local groups, including the Adult Services Minority Ethnic group of which Independent Lives is a member. The survey was answered by over 500 people.

Deaf Positives Action Club

Deaf Positives Action Club offer their social club for people who want to learn British Sign Language (BSL) or improve their skills they already attained.

Deaf Positives Action have an excellent team who are there to support you.

Why Deaf Positives Action set up a club?

Deaf Positives Action understand that you have difficulty finding a Deaf Club to mingle in with Deaf peers in order to improve their BSL skill because not many people there would be happy to help you as they want to have their own time and have their social life.

This Moment - Connecting with the present:

Adults and young people aged 11yrs and over, who have experienced or been touched by mental health issues in some way or other (through personal experience or by knowing someone with experience), are being invited to enter an art competition to raise awareness of mental health. The title of the competition - This Moment: Connecting with the Present - reflects the 2015 (11-17 May) national Mental Health Awareness Week theme: Mindfulness.
