Supporting Disabled People in Work

The Papworth Trust has developed a number of top tips for employers who want to support disabled workers. The trust work daily with employers and jobseekers to raise awareness and re-instil confidence within disabled people that are looking for work, making disabled people understand the asset they can be to employers.

For example, one of the recommendations is for employers to partner with disability organisations for expert advice and guidance on making your workplace more accessible.

Access Issues Raised After Investigation

Companies vowed to improve disabled access after a BBC London investigation revealed widespread failure to accommodate disabled people. Last autumn two researchers documented their experiences using secret cameras.

In the footage, on four occasions the wheelchair user got stuck on a train when staff did not arrive to help them on time.

A Freedom of Information request made by BBC London found that disabled access complaints to Transport for London have almost trebled in three years.

British Sign Language Advice available via Red Dot at the DAC in Brighton

The Fed is using Red Dot in its Disability Advice Centre so that Deaf people and people who use British Sign Language (BSL) can drop in for advice and receive it straight away.

Red Dot is a new on-demand online interpreting service for British Sign Language (BSL), meaning a fully qualified & NRCPD-registered interpreter can be available right away via a computer and the internet.

The Fed Centre for indpendent living Journey to Employment

The Fed is really excited to announce the launch of a brand new project, called Journey 2 Employment. The overall aim of the project is to improve specialist employment support for both disabled people and those with a long term health condition.

Brighton Shopmobility launch

From Monday 30 March, Shopmobility will be offering a service from not one, not two, but three sites in the city: Churchill Square; London Road and Montague House.

People who want to hire a scooter or wheelchair will need to call us in advance to book their equipment. This will give us time to get the equipment to their preferred place of delivery (any of the above sites, or a bus stop, cafe, hotel or other convenient location close by). We will be able to take payment by telephone or online too.
